Problems associated with Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP

No major problems have been reported which are specific to Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP, but the following minor problems have emerged.

• All versions of DMAP for Windows will work under Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP but versions earlier than V5.2a will cause System Resources to gradually dwindle with repeated map production.

• If you create a new data file but DMAP displays the error message 'File Not Found', it may be caused by the way Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP deals with and displays file names. Unlike earlier versions of Windows, Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000/XP allows very long file names and also multiple 'extensions'. So, for example, if you use Notepad to create a boundary file and then save it as a file named berks.bdy, Notepad will actually save it as berks.bdy.txt and DMAP will not find it when it looks for berks.bdy. Worse still, when you use Windows Explorer to look for berks.bdy it appears to exist because, by default, Explorer does not display the full file name! A solution to this is to change the settings of Explorer:

  Windows 95/NT
  Select View|Options... and then make sure that the check box labelled 'Hide MS-DOS file extensions' is unchecked.

  Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
  Select View(or Tools)|Folder Options... then select the View tab and make sure that the check box labelled 'Hide file extensions for known file types' is unchecked.

  After changing this settting, you can then see the real full file name and change it if necessary. To avoid the misnaming of files when saving them, the file name can be placed between double quotes, for example, "berks.bdy". Remember also that versions of DMAP before V7.0 do not accept long file names, so the file name must consist of a maximum of 8 characters for the name and a maximum of 3 characters for the extension.
